Getting to know Nottingham!

The 2019 UK Biobanking Showcase will be hosted in Nottingham. Read on for some background information about the city and useful travel advice.

Nottingham: did you know?

Nottingham is arguably most famous for its close proximity to Sherwood Forest and of course the legend of Robin Hood. With a bow-bearing Robin Hood statue outside of the castle and a real life Sheriff of Nottingham, the city doesn’t disappoint!

There is more to Nottingham than its Merry Men though: the creator of traffic lights, shin pads and ibuprofen all hail from the city. It’s also home to the bramley apple tree, from which all bramley apples have descended!

Three of the oldest pubs in Britain can be found in Nottingham. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem has a cave-like charm as it is embedded in the hill below the castle, Ye Old Salutation Inn can be found on Maid Marian Way, and the Bell Inn is a Grade II listed building.

Taking a step further back in time, the origins of the city are uncertain, but there are records of it being ruled by a Saxon chieftain named Snot. There are references to ‘the homestead of the Snot’s people’, or Snottingham, which was only slightly shortened to give us its name today!

Have a few minutes to spare?

If you’re arriving to Nottingham early, take a walk along the canal waterfront and enjoy one of the restaurants at Castle Wharf. If you have a little longer, it’s a 10 minute walk to the castle and the famous Robin Hood statue!

And if its evening, the above route also takes you past an old pub well worth a visit - Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, reportedly England’s oldest surviving inn, built in 1189.
